IT’S A HOAX!!
!We all have seen the “announcement” Pipin Ferreras “supposedly” made in his page proclaiming his coming “out of the closet”.
IT IS NOT TRUE!
His computer has been hacked BY A CYBER-PIRATE, someone stole his password and broke into his Facebook page.

I spoke with him last…night and he is making an official…l disclaimer in the media. Not that i twould have mattered or change anything at all HAD it been true, but the fact is IT IS NOT! Too much of a M.C.P. to be getting as much as he is dealing!! (Male Chauvinist Pig…like a m lot of us!)

Sport as well as commercial fishermen do it. It’s a standard item on every respectable line fishing paraphernalia. Why not us?

The reflective tape on the gun in segments of 3 to 4 inches placed at gaps of the same measure I.M.H.O. helps break the contiguous silhouette of it.

Since long ago, in addition of a tandem of reflective, silvery little fish stickers on my rail gun (both rubber and alternative pneumatic) I have attached via a green mono-filament a Wilson brand, very realistic squid (big eye and everything!). With a small sinker in-line is keeps it just slightly negative.
In the final approach phase of a hunting dive, I have come to notice that the wandering squid just in front of my gun distracts and in occasions attracts the unsuspecting prey.

Quite a few Amber jacks have strayed from their original path and approach me to inspect. Big mistake!
When I don’t need it or to avoid entanglements when loading it just goes underneath the gun with a Velcro.

I know… it’s going to be said this is not new, already posted, so on and so forth…but what can I do?
If flashers are often used on the float line trailing us, why not in front of us?
O.K. I’m ready, shoot away guys!

Very original…graceful, and very enjoyable too!

I wholeheartedly recommend to watch it. Good for Kirk and his team for bringing new and innovative ways of presenting our beloved sport without the traditional “star approach”. It’s the message that’s important and the messenger is inconsequential. (Gosh, I love that word…!)

Refreshing, and a welcome alternative from the “usual suspects”.

Knowing the vast reach this Forum has in the spear fishing and free diving community and in the best of spirits to further expose this quest for spearfishing instructors prospects by Deep Quests Institute is that this post is made. It has the healthy intention it may reach as many members for their input and or opinions.

Since this intention to look for applicants to sign up to for a course in order become instructors of Deep Quest Institute has already been published in its Facebook page by Deep Quest Institute whose president is Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras, here is reproduced the verbatim solicitation post:

More important, they will be able to pass safety knowledge tests to avoid silly accidents spear fishermen and free divers make very often. Remember that many of the world champions came out of a program like this that I did in the past.

The Snorkel…always In or OUT?

Two separate opinions on this subject. Let the members give their input.
First opinion. Snorkel out as the divers submerges.
Argument:
The diver will stick his head directly out of the water and inhale without clearing the snorkel first. Saves time. According to this, diver will not have to clear or blow into a water filled snorkel.

Second opinion .Snorkel always kept in place before, during and after every dive.
Argument:
Snorkel remains fixed in place during immersion,ascending and surface recuperation by mouth and second point of fixation (strap or clip). If loose will dangle and swivel underwater.
Upon surfacing diver with snorkel can immediately and uninterruptedly assume horizontal recuperating position ALL WHILE KEEPING HIS VISUAL CONTACT WITH BOTTOM.
Archimedes Principle working at its best.
Body surface spread evenly, effortless flotation versus constant kicking for the necessary vertical position of a diver without snorkel in mouth.
If snorkel cleared by the “aspersion” method (blowing out a few inches before surface breaking) it will be dry and ready for immediate inhalation of air. This debunks the opposing argument.

Uninterrupted permanent visual acquisition of object of interest (prey, gun, fleeing or wounded fish, etc.)

If a Moderator would kindly set a POLL or survey we will know what the majority of us do. For the time being until this happens (if it does….)

Avoiding (or trying to..) cheating in “PERSISTENT"S pricey spear fishing competition.

Having read all the posts and replies here I go, and please, bear with me…

1.-Each Team must bring a Commissioner of their own who must be SWITCHED among boats of a different competitor’s team.

2.-Each Team boat has to be supplied with 3 metal or wire fish stringers identified by a numbered plaque. Each number corresponds to a different team but the identity is ONLY known by the organizers. Once each team has chosen which pieces are going to be weighted in the opposing Commissioner seals shut the metal wire and deliver the package (randomly placed among others) to the weighting station.

3.-Each team’s boat must have a clearly identifying FLAG (24 X 24”) issued by organizer before leaving port. Flag is to be placed right under or beside main boat’s “DIVER BELOW” FLAG so each competitor boat can be identified and randomly inspected by a team of unmarked organizer’s vessels at any moment.

4.-Of course ONE`SINGLE GPS for each boat has to be OBLIGATORY and in case of any complaint or discrepancy must be rendered for inspection by judges. Denial to accept this signifies immediate disqualification.

5.- The “open area” MUST have some sort of demarcation. For instance, 25 nautical miles both north and south of the departing marina. Of course, fish heavens or park intrusion will constitute IMMEDIATE disqualification.

And there are other preventive and deterrent countermeasures, but I prefer NOT to share them in here, (sorry guys…!) IF, I nevertheless participate ...I think.. the organizers will be on top of them.

Don’t hate me guys, I’m only the…what am I? I’ll get back to you on that one. Bye, bye…!

First South Florida Freedivers summer spearfishing competition

On Sunday the 24th. the South Florida Invitational Spearfishing Tournament was successfully held in spite of the rough seas conditions that could not damper the enthusiasm of the 23 registered teams.
Only pelagic species were allowed into the competition resulting in a magnificent 40 pound Great Amberjack winning the largest fish award.
In the Men’s Team category the “Persistent” Team made of World Champion free diver Pipin Ferreras, Jorge Caba and Manuel Oses President of “Renegade” high performance boats as the Team’s captain, won first place in total weight.
Their spearing time had to be halted almost three hours before the deadline of the competition due to special circumstances.
The Persistent Team has to deliver their catch prematurely at the weighting station and yet this didn’t interfere with them winning
Here are a couple of photos of the feisty award ceremony held at Scotty’s Landing restaurant right on Coconut Grove Marina. A very nice occasion indeed with raffles, entertainment, etc. in a neat package.
This spearfishing event fulfilled its role as the season’s warm up to many more exciting free diving and spearfishing events.:
There was great expectation and commentaries among the participants on the approaching Persistent Team spearfishing Tournament on next June. It sure promises to be a very attracting event for many local as well as out of the sate teams chivalrously competing for the biggest prizes ever awarded in any previous spearfishing competition in South Florida
